About

I can vividly remember the excitement of finding a camera - one of those thin long ones that took the weird film - on my neighbor's lawn when I was six or seven years old. The student housing in Amherst, Massachusetts where I lived was full of great subjects. As a kid cameras seemed so magical - I would look at the world through this little hole, press the button, hear a click, and rewind. And then sometime later, once the film was developed (thanks mom), those things that I took pictures of were there in front of me again.

While things have certainly changed since those days of point-click-rewind, I am attracted to photography for some of the same reasons as when I was a child. The camera as a gadget has always been alluring. Even as adults (or perhaps especially) we love our toys. I truly enjoy the gear talk - a language of its own. There is something so exciting about getting your prints back from the lab, watching a print develop in the dark room, or now just looking at the LCD on the back of you camera and seeing the beauty that can be coaxed out of the world. To put a frame around something and capture light to make an image is real magic - I hope to never lose that feeling.

People are the aspect of photography that perhaps attracts me the most -they are so interesting. Being a photographer allows me to really take a look at people being themselves. It is a gift to be invited into people's lives to capture the joy and beauty that they are experiencing. I strive to be engaging and fun and even a little goofy at times. At weddings I endeavor to be one of the guests, at family portraits, one of the family, and while taking head shots, a friend.

My style is fluid and fresh and flexible. I enjoy both the storytelling aspects and the moments of beauty in photography. I strive to be spontaneous, artistic, unobtrusive, fun, and to continue to surprise myself and be open to new ideas.
